:: Smoking Facts and Figures ::
|
|
Smoking (tobacco use) is the leading cause of preventable deaths and diseases in the world right now. Unfortunately, a large number of population is involved in this self killing habit without any demarcation of the gender. There are approximately 1.1 billion smokers in the world right now out of which 200 million are women. 800 million of them are present in the developing countries and the rest are in the developed countries. The majority of the adults approximately (70-80%) start the smoking before the age of 18 years. It has been estimated that about 5000 teenagers light their first cigarette daily. The use of tobacco increases the death rate in the users by about 70%. It is approximated that about 440,000 to 450,000 deaths in America are caused by the use of tobacco each year.
Another study says that those who quit the smoking before the age of 50 have a reduced risk of death by up to 15% in the next 15-20 years.
WHY SHOULD WE QUIT SMOKING:
The use of tobacco has resulted in a rapid increase in the coronary heart diseases each year. As a result more and more population is suffering from myocardial infarction each year. There is an increased cholesterol level in the blood and an increased blood pressure due to smoking .This is contributing to the increased number of deaths due to heart failure.
It hampers the lungs of an individual. The smokers are very prone to get the lung cancer. Oral cancers and bronchial cancers are on rampage in the tobacco users. There is also an increase in the cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. The smokers usually suffer from the frequent episodes of cough due to increased fluid secretion and decreased in clearing mechanism (cilia) of the bronchi.
The use of cigarette in women has increased the incidence of rectal cancers. Especially its use in the pregnant lady can lead to abnormalities in the new born baby.
It can also effect the beauty of a person by darkening the lips. It can cause premature signs of aging such as wrinkles. This can badly affect the facial beauty of a person and makes him/her look older than his/her actual age.
Chronic tobacco use can affect the functions of the reproductive organs of the users. This can lead to decrease fertility of males and females and as a result decrease in the sexual performance. |
