:: Monitoring Your Breast Health ::
|
|
One of the easiest and best ways for women to protect themselves is to be well-informed about common examinations to monitor breast health.
Schedule a mammogram!
A mammogram is a safe, low-dose x-ray of the breast that can detect lumps that are too small to be felt during regular breast exams. A mammogram can detect a growth up to two years before it can be felt. Malignant tumors that are detected early are generally easier to treat and remove before cancer can spread to the rest of the body.
Because about half of all new cases of breast cancer occur in women age 65 and older, we recommend that women schedule a mammogram as follows:
- 35 to 39 years of age-once, to establish a baseline
- 40 to 49 years of age-every one to two years
- Ages 50 to 75-yearly
- Over age 75-at the discretion of the member and doctor
Remember to do a monthly breast self-examination!
A breast self-examination (BSE) is a simple procedure to help a woman detect breast lumps. Many breast cancer tumors are first discovered by women themselves, often by accident. Women who do regular breast self-examinations may find tumors early, when they are small, easily treated, and have not spread. |
