:: Preventing Fitness Injuries ::
|
|
Did you resolve to exercise more in 2005? Fitness injuries are often a result of trying to do too much too fast. Other causes of fitness injuries include not using proper equipment and safety gear; not warming up, cooling down or stretching; and not paying attention to the body’s signals. Preferred Care is committed to helping you lead a healthier life. Go for your fitness goals with these simple tips in mind:
- Wear shoes that fit well and are right for your exercise activity.
- Warm up before every exercise session and cool down afterward.
- Stretch before and after exercising.
- Learn the correct way to use exercise equipment.
- Use safety gear recommended for your sport.
- Use common sense and listen to your body’s signals to avoid overtraining.
- Stop when it hurts.
- Stay within your target heart range (see below)
- Drink plenty of fluids before, during and after exercise.
- Avoid exercising in extremely hot or cold conditions.
- Set reasonable exercise goals and slow down if necessary.
- Remember that real gains are always gradual gains.
- Alternate between a variety of exercise activities to avoid overtraining in one area.
- Exercise consistently, at least three times a week, rather than exerting yourself intensely only once a week.
- Talk to your doctor before you start of increase your level of physical activity.
How to Find Your Target Heart Range
1. To find the range of your target heart rate, subtract your age from 220.
2. Multiply that number by .6 to find the lower end of your target heart range. Round off the number, if necessary.
3. To find the upper end of your target heart range, multiply that number by .85 instead of .6.
4. Divide your range numbers by 6 to get your 10-second range. While exercising, take your pulse for 10 seconds; the number of beats should fall into your 10-second range. |
